Thailand is a premier international climbing destination, renowned for its dramatic tropical karst topography. The climbing centers primarily on the massive limestone towers and seaside cliffs of the Andaman coast provinces, most famously around Railay Beach, Tonsai, and the islands of the Krabi region, as well as Chiang Mai in the north. The rock features an incredible variety of formations, including steep stalactites, tufa columns, pockets, and massive overhangs. Climbing styles lean heavily toward steep, pumpy sport routes on immaculate limestone, alongside world-class deep-water soloing directly above clear Andaman Sea waters. The destination accommodates a wide range of abilities, though its steep terrain and overhanging caves make it particularly celebrated for intermediate to hard sport climbing.
