Anyone who has hiked the Chief trail towards Cobra Crack has seen this boulder. It stands out like a diamond in the rough. It is right next to the trail. I was first told about this boulder by Sarah who did the initial cleaning. She saw the potential for a line where others may have just walked by. When I saw it in person I was blown away. It is a king of gems. I finished cleaning it and searched closely for the seemingly non existent holds. The movement flows like warm chocolate from a fondue, thick and decadent. Its underbelly smoothed by a glacier and its lip, course and gritty, perfect for grabbing. The landing is flat and soft so despite this boulders height I only needed one pad since landing at the crux or before was quite pillowy. This was very welcome since the hike is a lot of stairs (would roughly take me 25 mins with pad and pack from the campground.) Its truly a perfect line and I am grateful for its existence. The name comes from the fact that the Chief trail was closed briefly today because of a bear sighting, so I was initially turned away from today;s goal. When they opened it again I hiked up and saw a conservation officer with a rifle in hand. I worry for the bear and hope it stays away, for its own good.
