Ciénega de Gonzales is a quiet little mountain town. The stores are only open Friday through Sunday. So bring supplies as it is more expensive up here. The main areas are easily accessed through 10-50 minutes hikes. La palma gets morning shade as well as the main areas. But afternoon shade come to the main areas as well after about 1-3pm depending on the time of the year. Hot in summer, cold in winter. Mosquitoes and gnats are an issue and there isn't much water in town. Tread lightly as there are many user groups in the area. The big side by sides are horrible. A nice change from Protrero and much better if you can climb above 5.11.
This boulder is better known for its close proximity to town rather then for having quality problems, but it adds a little hideout for those not wanting to climb at the always busy traverse wall by the ocean. Head up the path to the top of the hill above the rope climbing, there is two small boulders, the one on the right is barbwire boulder. As with everything on the Island there is a high chance that these problems were climbed a long time ago, but recently a local took the time to remove a whole bunch of rusted barbed wire surrounding the boulder, freeing up a couple short lines. We could not find any info on these boulders so we are going with these names for now, but are certainly open to change what we need to. Its climbing... just have fun.
This area features agreat assortment of quality bouldering scattered throughout thebeautiful larch forests below the towering cliffs of the Cat Wall. There are a wide variety of gradesand most of the problems tend to be on steep, quality Gneiss involving big moves with good landings. There is certainly potential for more routes here and variations due to the nature of the rock; great holds everywhere! There are also many smaller boulders that have been climbed, but not recorded. A wide variety of wildlife is quite common in these parts including:black bear, wild turkeys, cougars, deer, & big horn sheep, and the forest is especially nice in fall when the larch’s needles change into a spectacular golden color; a truly magnificent little place.... With an extremely short approach this crag is perfect for getting a few after work laps in while avoiding crowds.The rock is uniquely featured, making for a good change of pace from the standard Squamish climbing.
This is the approach area for scramblers seeking the upper tarn and the somewhat popular NoSeeUm Peak, for which this area is named. Indeed, it was a scramblers blog that revealed the headwall boulder to the maker of this guide. While the weather may not cooperate in Alberta at all times for climbing, this spot may reveal a days or afternoons worth of moderate distraction for those already in the area, those seeking a good weather refuge when all other areas are deluged, or just a change of scenery. Climbing can be begun with some post-holing as early as May, and into the late fall, depending on snowfall. Be aware that avalanches of snow can occur early on in the season, as well as rock-fall down the gullies at anytime. You will most likely not encounter people, and it is always a good idea to carry bear spray in the Parks. One or two pads may suffice, or three for luxury, for most problems. A spotter is always recommended. As always climbing is an inherently risky activity and it is the responsibility of the reader to follow their own good judgement regarding such activities.
Overall this cliff is a newer moderate warm-up venue for climbers going to the Moose Mountain Crags. The Beach Front Buttress was fully developed in the spring of 2019. Until recently it was the first climbable cliff encountered on the way into the area. There are thirteen routes on this sunny south facing aspect. The crag is tucked in behind a treed shoulder with generally good sun exposure and it’s out of the wind for the most part. Overall it hosts moderate climbing (ten routes are in the 5.10 range or less) making for an ideal stop to warm up on before heading up valley to try some of the harder fare on offer. This small crag provides a pleasant venue to spend the day doing low intensity moderate cragging. The only drawback to these fun routes is the overall height of the cliff at around 20m or less, it simply leaves climbers wanting more. In spring/late winter this small buttress catches the sun roughly an hour before the Moose Patch sector located another 5 minutes up the road. Stopping off here allows climbers to start their day bit sooner. This crag is usually out of the wind and a sun trap making it ideal for late winter and early spring rock climbing and fighting with marginal temperatures. Named after the unusual sand beach found below the cliff on the northern flank of Canyon Creek. The venue makes for a very fun hang. The creekbed was dry during the three weeks of development in March and early April of 2019. However, later in the year be aware that water levels can change rapidly and crag access may require proceeding upstream crossing over the bridge and then working back along the north bank of Canyon Creek during spring runoff or following heavy rains from intense summer thunder storms. All climbs on this crag are well protected, most require six or seven draws plus clips for the anchor. All top anchors are from two staggered ring-bolts. Note: There are some very low first bolts on some routes along with a couple, two-bolt base anchors detailed on the photo-topo. These low height bolts are intended for base anchors to back up tied off trees to allow lead rope soloing on these climbs. Please do not remove these lower hangers. Feel free to clip these bolts while leading or ignore them. Please don’t remove or vandalize this low hanging hardware.
The first cluster of climbs is located at the very far, left-hand (south) end of the crag. From the road, hike up through grass and brush to the base of an obvious buttress.
Everyday I get psyched on a new thing, heres the 6 routes (out of about 20) that I'm most psyched and close on. The trip is lacking sends and with a week left in Spain its time to change.
