Black Rocks

48 Sport Climbs, 1 Trad Climbs

Description:

The rock quality here is the best in the St. George area - basalt with a shiny, slick black desert patina. Holds are mostly pockets with sharp edges. The rock itself is very low friction. The routes are short , 30-40’ on the sunny side and 40-50’ on the shady side. The climbing is very good with something for everyone, both trad and sport and 5.8-5.13. If the routes were longer this would be a destination crag.

Directions / Travel Info:

Drive north out of St George on Bluff St/Hwy 18. About 2 miles past the Sunset Blvd intersection, look for an unmarked pullout on the southbound side of the road. Park here, cross the fence about 100’ north of the parking area into the Red Cliffs NCA, and follow the obvious trail to the top of the shady side wall. Scramble down into the gully, shady side is on your left, sunny side on the right. Shady side gets sunny in the mid afternoon. Driving time 5 minutes, walking time 2 minutes.
